In order to carry the passengers around Heathrow Airport work has started upon a new low-energy, battery-powered transit system. This would be a major addition to the system at Heathrow Airport and passengers would be hugely benefited through it.
The initial stage of the Personal Rapid Transit System will have 18 vehicles with no drivers which will be used to take people from the new Terminal 5 to the business car park.
The user of Heathrow Airport, BAA tells the BBC website that their main purpose is to have the guided vehicles functional in 2009, where each vehicle will have the capacity of taking four passengers along with their bags.
It will also bring down congestion and will fasten up journey times, BAA argues that the new pods will not cause any emissions while travelling, as they will be on trial basis for a year at Terminal 5 before it is decided that whether to roll them out over the airport.
It is set that Heathrow's Terminal 5 will be opened in March 2008, with the location which is decided will provide three new car parks with 7,000 extra parking spaces.
The standards which are declared by the airport administration make sure regarding the developed transport facilities for the new terminal comprising of a road junction associating the transit point with the M25 and Automatic Number Plate Recognition to permit ease of entry and exit for the pre-booking spaces in the car parks.
