Perth guarantees to host WA's iconic Hopman Cup tournament until 2013. A new six-year deal between the State Government and the International Tennis Federation puts an end to rumours of ending the tournament.
Tourism Minister Sheila McHale declared the new agreement would allow the tournament played at Burswood Dome from 2008-2010 and the new Perth Arena from 2010-2013.
Ms McHale said, "The Hopman Cup is very significant on Western Australia's events calendar and a six-year deal is a real coup for the State and our tourism industry".
She revealed that event had a media and economic impact to WA worth $7.3 million-a return of about $11.40 for every $1 invested in the previous year.
Ms McHale said the negotiations to keep the Cup in Perth won an agreement twice the length of any other signed between WA and the International Tennis Federation.
It meant, the special Memorandum of Understanding was highly likely the event would stay in Perth beyond 2013.
Ms McHale said, "Planning for this year's Hopman Cup is well advanced and will see the best ranked team in the world coming to Perth".
"Men's world number three Novac Djokavic and women's number three Jelena Jankovic have accepted the invitation to represent Serbia at this year's Hopman Cup, with more teams to be announced soon.
"The Carpenter Government is proud of its long relationship as a major sponsor of such an iconic Western Australian and internationally-recognised event."
