Lufthansa, the German flag carrier, has announced a hike in fuel surcharge on all of its services, in response to the continuously rising cost of crude oil and kerosene. This is not a surprising move taken by the airlines but surely the pressure on air travellers is increasing, as almost all the airlines are increasing the fuel surcharges that shoot the prices up of air travel.
The airline has decided to increase the fuel surcharge by adding five Euros to all flight segments on its long-haul services, which will take the cost up to 82.
And, the fuel surcharge on its domestic as well as intra-European services will go up by four Euros-increased to 21 per flight segment.
The increased fuel surcharge will be applicable to all the tickets issued by Lufthansa on or after the 14th of May. So, passengers making their reservations of the dates past 14th of May will have to pay more prices for the same routes. This will be more severe for business travellers as they have to travel more frequently to different destinations.
The decision of the German flag carrier to increase fuel surcharges clearly shows that several other airline companies are struggling to deal with the rising oil price: the price of Brent Crude currently stands at a record high of $124 a barrel. But as per the statements of various airlines, they do not have any other choice apart from sharing their burden of fuel costs with the passengers.
