You know that times have changed when tourism starts tapping into the Â'nostalgiaÂ' of the former East Germany (GDR). The Ostel hotel is located in the Â"Berlin MitteÂ" district, minutes away from the centre of Berlin and from the cityÂ's bars, restaurants, clubs and shops.
The Ostel will take you back in time where you can enjoy a Â'socialistÂ' stay - as it would have been when the GDR held sway.
The décor and furniture is all typical GDR, with various types of rooms available, each differently themed, at a number of varying and very reasonable prices. There is the Â'Pioneer CampÂ' (bunk beds for up to 6 people) from 9 € or $14 AUS per person. Next up are single or double rooms from 38 € or $60AUS. The ultimate room is the aptly named Â"Stasi suiteÂ", a four room pre-fabricated apartment for 5 people at 35 € per person per night.
The suite even has secret police bugging devices!
There are many clever and amusing touches of everyday life in the GDR, including a Â'border crossingÂ' (the check-in) and there is also a city tour in a Trabant, the most commonly made GDR car if you wish to have the complete experience.
However, Ostel assures intending guests that there are no Â'interrogationsÂ', late night knocking on doors and the mattresses, bed linen and plumbing are all fully modern!
The Ostel has itÂ's own Â"KonsumÂ" store offering a selection of GDR products, so if you are looking for that conversation-piece for your next party (as in dinner or dance party, not Â'the partyÂ'Â….)
