Electric cars to make areas eco-friendly
Green Travel

European residents of a manageable and livable housing area in Sheffield will have an access to electric pool cars and integral recharging points after provision was secured to support making it extra eco-friendly.

Three recharging points will be installed by the Environment Trust at the new Bright Green Homes development in Norfolk Park, while free Smart cars for residents' use will be provided by Sheffield Council and Whizzgo-Leeds-based car pool specialist.

The £5.2m housing project is part of one of the biggest green adaptation schemes in the country. The first forty-seven homes are presumed to be complete by next February.

The prospective residents of the Bright Green Homes - the construction got underway earlier this year - will consequently be getting memberships of a car club.

The cost of hiring cars powered by a battery for an hour will be £4.95. The cost of hiring a battery-powered car also includes fuel, breakdown cover, insurance, VAT and tax.

For providing free recharging facility to any electric vehicle, three Elecktrobays, supplied by Brighton company Elektromotive, will also be installed.

"We have approached our Norfolk Park housing development holistically, ensuring not only that the housing is sustainably built, energy efficient and on the tram route into Sheffield city centre, but that the people who live there will also be able to travel by car when they need to – there are always going to be times when a car will be the most practical option", said Jon Aldenton, chief executive of Environment Trust.
