The Carbon Trust praised Devon County Council for its work to cut carbon emissions. The Council is engaged in the Local Authority Carbon Management programme of the Carbon Trust .
The energy efficiency activities across the countrywide programme finished in total yearly savings of about 250,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and over £25 million in monetary terms.
The Carbon Trust underlined the County Council as an incomparable example of this accomplishment.
"Devon County Council has put in place a robust framework within which to further develop its carbon saving activity over the next 5 - 10 years. The work of its carbon management team set an excellent example both to the rest of the sector and across Devon's local business and domestic community. The Carbon Trust would like to congratulate Devon Country Council on this success", said Richard Rugg, Head of Public Sector at the Carbon Trust.
Devon has set a target of minimum 2.1 per cent of reduction in carbon emissions a year, but is expected to cut it down by 13.3 per cent - about 5,620 tonnes of carbon dioxide and a £6.5 million saving, by 2011-12.
"Everyone who has been doing it for Devon' should be pleased and proud of this recognition from the Carbon Trust. Devon County Council has made a firm commitment to make Devon the greenest county in the country, and this is praise indeed for all of our efforts. We now have to continue to build on our solid foundations to reduce our carbon footprint even further which will benefit us all", said Councillor, Brian Greenslade, Devon County Council Leader.
