Commuters go green on car-free day in Devon
Green Travel

Observing annual car-free day, hundreds of individuals across Devon went green yesterday, as they went on foot, bike and bus for their work. Although Exeter was busy with cars, but there was a little more crowd in the buses.

Jackie Davy, a member of a group of microbiologists from the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, was put into a wheelchair by her group-mates and advanced all the way from the Digby and Sowton park and ride to Wonford. This is really a good gesture to encourage responsible tourism.

She said, "Hopefully, we will get lots of attention and make everybody aware to ditch their car for the day".

The event was organized by Devon County Council, and the staff went to work by train, bus, bike and foot. Seven payroll employees used hobby horse to travel into into County Hall.

Devon County Council Travel Wise officer, Lesley Smith, said, "It has gone extremely well. Every year, the support from organisations and the public in general grows. It's going from strength to strength and people really enjoy the day, coming up with increasingly bizarre travel plans. Hopefully, we can encourage people to use the bus or train more often".

EDF Energy staff has also made an excellent effort to be environmentally friendly. A survey of more than 400 employees discovered that only 28 per cent went to work on car, while the rest went by bus, shared a car or even chose to walk.
