A majority of travel experts think that travellers preparing for road trips this summer can enjoy considerable savings if they leave their own vehicles at home and hire a car instead, especially from the biggest car rental companies, such as Hertz, Avis and Enterprise.
A large number of Americans still have gas guzzling big sedans or SUVs, in the face of the fact that petrol prices have moved up steadily over the years and have now surpassed $4 per gallon in the US.
As such, people with big family cars would be well advised to leave their vehicles at home and hire a more fuel-efficient car from a car hire firm.
In spite of that, some may still be unwilling to exchange their luxurious SUV with a smaller car, particularly on a longer road trip and with little ones on the backseat.
However, a common mistaken belief is that fuel-efficient vehicles must also be small, overcrowded and uncomfortable, but this does not need to be the situation.
The hybrid vehicles are by a large amount the most fuel-efficient; still many of these are very comfortable.
The Toyota Prius, for example, is the most liked hybrid vehicle, and is also one of the most fuel-efficient passenger vehicles, but it still offers almost the same space and comfort that a mid-sized car would provide.
Most calculations show that a Prius may allow the traveller to drive an additional thirty miles per gallon.
