Cars remain the top priority for UK peopl
Green Travel

A government report has declared that around 60% of journeys made in the last year were by car. Further, it has been found out that around 1/4 of these were made for trips of less than 2 miles.

A drop in car miles has been revealed in statistics of the Department for Transport (DfT) from 2005. There is a sharp increase in alongside walking and frequent use of public transport. This decrease in the usage of car is a positive step by British people for carbon offsetting.  By using lesser cars, they are saving their environment.

In spite of this, uninterrupted rise in the number of cars is shown in the figures.

It was in 2006 that 25 % of households who did not own a car. But the figure show that there were 38% of householders in 1985/6.

Green Travel

A new law is expected to be signed on Wednesday by Los Angels Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa that prohibits smoking at all Los Angeles parks and beaches.

It was voted in favor of the measure 12-0 last week by the city council. Concern was cited over second-hand-smoke by the members and the danger it bears to non-smokers, but the damaging fire at Griffith Park in May encouraged the members to take appropriate measures.

Authorities believe a smoker sparked the fire, and they were prompted to take action to prohibit smoking. It will make illegal to smoke in all city parks since the imposition of the ban. Beaches have already been declared illegal to smoke.

Audit shows £10bn is needed for carbon offsetting in UK
Green Travel

The first audit of the UK's environmental taxation has been released by the Taxpayers Alliance. The paper claimed that the government is raising a total of £10bn more from green taxes than is needed to envelope the cost of carbon footprint in the UK.

Claims made by the lobby group shows that just £11.7bn would have served the purpose of covering the cost of pollution resulted from the greenhouse gas emissions in 2005, whilst a total of £21.9bn were raised from green taxes.

"Green taxes and charges impose substantial costs on, amongst others, northern manufacturers and the NHS. Green taxes in the UK are already well in excess of the level they need to be to meet the academic estimates of the social costs of carbon emissions", commented Corin Taylor, research director.

Ford developes index for carbon offsetting
Green Travel

As part of a development by Ford, a lifecycle product sustainability index has been developed by the car maker for its cars. Ford has applied the newly developed index to the Galaxy, Mondeo and S-Max. These efforts are directly related to carbon offsetting schemes adopted by the company.

In an effort to cut down the total impact on the environment, all the research and development programmes to come for the comapany's European cars will make use of this creation. This step by the leading car maker is a direct indication about the topic of environmental safety, which many companies are adopting. Volkswagen America is the recent example of such efforts, and a few days ago committed itself to reduce its carbon impressions or to do something for carbon offsetting.

The elements that are enveloped include the energy and materials being used during the process of assembly and distribution, safety, noise and use of sustainable building materials, well-organised with levels of the running cost. It is a very technical approach adopted by the company and no wonders that research work done in automobile engineering and mechanical engineering would be of great help for the company at this juncture.

London's carbon impression rules corrected
Green Travel

Many have seen London's way of setting its mass charges as spotted, frequently rewarding big hybrid cars while failing to recognise the advantages of cars with a share of their emissions levels. Today, it's completely changed, records Dave Moore.

The several loopholes fixed up with London's authentic mass charge scheme look like being unmarked with actual carbon impressions of the vehicles to be put under consideration rather than the identified advantages of their power-trains.

The significance of the efforts made by London to finish its act is fitting to New Zealand, as several of our local authorities and many all over the world have been referring to the London model as one they may take into consideration to adopt.

Arguing that the rest of the world was moving in the same direction, Mr. Gummer said that the arrangements could give Britain an aggressive bend just as it did after it led the industrial revolution.

According to development charity Christian Aid, the carbon footprint of Tesco does not count the emissions resulted from the journeys that shoppers are making to and from its stores or those drawn by its suppliers.

Christian Aid understands that Tesco's actual impact on the climate change could be as much as twelve times more than that the supermarket accepts to be.

More efforts needed to achieve green targets

However, they said that Britain should easily meet its responsibilities under the Kyoto Protocol to cut down carbon dioxide emissions by 12.75 per cent on 1990 levels by 2010.

New environmental friendly visitor attractions in Kent
Green Travel

Kent achieved a unique environmentally prompted visitor attraction. The spirit of a Lapland Christmas daytrip all the way to the Bedgebury Forest in Goudhurst, Kent for five weeks from 24 November 2007 is being brought by Lapland UK, working with the Forestry Commission. Dipping those nasty carbon footprints, a legitimate substitute to a magical Christmas day trip will be provided to families, expects Lapland UK.

Mike Battle, creator, said, "Bringing a high quality Christmas experience to this country has been my dream since visiting Lapland with my wife and our four boys in 2002". "But what galvanised me into action were the potential environmental benefits. Until Lapland UK the only option for a truly magical Christmas experience for young families was an arduous trip flying to Lapland and back in one day (depositing 2 tonnes of carbon)".

Father Christmas, real reindeer, husky dogs, Raymond Briggs' 'The Snowman', Hollywood snow and ice special effects, and rocking horse makers to the Queen (toy factory) will all be associated with this exclusive experience set deep in the 2,000 acre Bedgebury Forest in Kent. A family will require about four hours experiencing this ambitious attraction. This country will also see the best ever Christmas adventure.

Help from developers for lower carbon footprints
Green Travel

One of the greatest accounts for concern this year is the environmental effect of carbon emissions and the size of the UK's carbon footprint. There is a rise in our footprint as a result of burning fuel for energy whether it is through lighting or heating the houses or through travelling around the country.

One of the biggest contributors to rising carbon emissions is air travel which is closely followed by car travel. Moreover, in London, owning a car is also very expensive.

So, in an attempt to encourage homeowners not to buy cars, Inspace Homes is offering all buyers at their new scheme Blue with joint venture associate Circle Anglia in Islington, N1, free membership for twelve months to Streetcar, the car club scheme backed by Islington Council.

Responsible tourism on rise for UK holidays

An expert from the tourism industry revealed that a growing number of British tourists are willing to go for environmentally-responsible breaks. This is surely an encouraging sign for green tourism drives that are quite prevalant now due to more efforts done by many go-green companies that are encouraging locals to look for contributing their lot to save the environment.

A spokesperson for responsibletravel.com said that an increasing number of holidaymakers is worried about the environmental impact of frequently flying for travelling abroad and as a consequence most of them are planning to cut their carbon footprint. If this is achieved, it will hugely boost the concept of green travel and sustainable tourism.

"We are seeing the beginning of real consumer demand for more responsible tourism - it is this which, in our view, will cause the revolution in tourism", said responsibletravel.com spokesperson.
