EasyJet and Virgin Atlantic discuss Gatwick bid
European Airlines | EasyJet | Virgin Atlantic

In a recent development, EasyJet and Virgin Atlantic are exploring the possibility of coming together in order to buy Gatwick airport. A report published in The Times stated that the two airlines have been holding discussions with financial backers over forming a consortium to propose a bid on the airport worth £2.5 billion. Provided their bid is successful, both the airlines have guaranteed to base a considerable number of their aircraft at Gatwick Airport. It is said that this move would significantly improve the revenue of the airport in future.

At present, Easyjet and Virgin partly own the National Air Traffic Control Service (NATS) with five other airlines - bmi, British Airways, Monarch, MyTravel and Thompsonfly. It is most likely that some of them or all of these carriers would form part of the new consortium. When asked about the deal, a Virgin Atlantic spokesman neither confirmed nor denied the report.

He observed, "We have always been interested in bringing together a consortium to buy the airport. We are talking to lots of different parties at present and those talks continue."

BAA, the owner of the airport put up Gatwick for sale following the directives issued by the by the Competition Commission in September suggesting the break-up of the holdings by the operator. It is expected that next year the government will issue a ruling that would break the ownership of seven UK airports, which the commission claims to have created a monopoly in the region.

European Airlines | EasyJet

In a recent significant move, EasyJet has announced its decision to launch a brand new service that will connect Gatwick with the famous ski destination of Salzburg in Austria. The flights under this service will commence with effect from 13 December. Most notably, the launch of the service perfectly coincides with the skiing season when most skiers make their journey to the Alps well in time before the start of Christmas holidays.

In a highly welcomed move today, easyJet announced a brand new route offering a connection between Gatwick and Salzburg in Austria. This has come as a welcome initiative to please the involved skiers looking forward to an easy trip to the famous sky site. Under this new service, the airline will offer flights three times a week. The fares start from £32.99 one way including all taxes and charges.

Most notably, with its launch, the brand new route takes up the total number of easyJet flights operated from Gatwick to 50 for this winter. Over and above, the airline expects that more than 16,000 passengers will be travelling on the new service on its highly anticipated launch. One of the important reasons to anticipate the significant demand in this route is that the service is offered in time for the ski season.

Ryanair, easyJet and BA ratings cut
European Airlines | British Airways | EasyJet | Ryanair

In a surprising move yesterday, the ratings of Ryanair, easyJet and British Airway were all cut by investment banks. This is a result of the efforts of the aviation industry to sustain the slow economic growth.

Credit Suisse analysts have significantly lowered their recommendation on easyJet from 'outperform' to 'neutral'. In addition, the rating for Ryanair has been dropped from 'neutral' to 'underperform.' Also, Exane BNP Paribas has lowered its recommendation on BA from 'neutral' to 'underperform'. Over and above, the analysts have considerably lowered their share-price estimates over the stock of each of the airlines.

Credit Suisse London-based analysts including Gerald Khoo wrote observed, "It has become increasingly clear that the current consumer downturn is likely to be a prolonged one. The trading environment this winter is going to be a lot tougher than we had previously anticipated."

easyJet predicts higher fares
European Airlines | EasyJet

In a statement made yesterday, easyJet noted that the present fare increases in the industry are inevitable during this winter. Further, the chief executive of the airline warned that the high price of oil would further lower down the available choices for travellers according to the report published in The Times. Though it is difficult to state now how the public would receive this, such statements follow from a number of similar airlines including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

Andy Harrison, the chief of the budget airline observed that the soaring fuel costs would even see some of the most popular airlines going out of business. However, he added saying that easyJet does not set airfares and goes by just accepting the market price. Expecting a significant reduction in the capacity for next year, he said the price increase during next year is rather imminent. He said that if the oil prices continue to rise, then several airlines will have to do capacity cuts or go out of business, which shall ultimately lead to higher fares.

According to Mr Harrison, it cannot be asserted for now as to how much would be the fare increase, since the impact of the rising fuel costs would prove to be different for different airlines. In case of easyJet, the fuel price rise necessitates an increase of not less than £7 a seat on every flight. However, the airline has partly offset this increase by introducing charges on bags checked into the hold.

EasyJet Sees Year Profit Dip
European Airlines | EasyJet

While the airline was contemplating on cutting its capacity for this winter on account of the high fuel prices, easyJet stated on Thursday that the pretax profit for the whole year might fall worse than what was actually expected earlier. According to the estimate made by the airline, it is said that the pretax profit for this year would be between GBP110 million to GBP120 million pounds (USD$219.7 million - USD$239.7 million).

According to a statement made by the company, the soaring fuel prices have added up around USD185 million to its fuel bill, which was the principal cause for getting its profit margins hit. According to yet another statement made by easyJet, the airline appears to have offset about 50 percent of its fuel bill increase by way of cutting costs, while the airline has confirmed that it would cut the capacity for the winter months by 4-6 percent to bring down the events of unprofitable flying.

On the other hand, the third-quarter revenue of the airline was up by 32 percent working out to GBP641 million, as a result of the airline absorbing the acquisition of GB Airways. During the same period, the revenue per seat rose up to not less than 12 percent.

EasyJet confirms cutbacks to Stansted flights
European Airlines | EasyJet

In a statement made recently, EasyJet has confirmed its decision to reduce the number of its winter services operated from Stansted Airport. This move by the airline follows its efforts to offset the alarming fuel bills due to the dramatic soaring of oil prices.

Explaining the scenario that has necessitated this cut back, the airline has quoted two principal factors that are haunting the airline industry as a whole at present namely the spiraling costs of fuel and the global economic downturn. Notably, these two major factors are expected to bring down the capacity of the airline at the London Airport by about 12 percent.

Over and above, during yet another recent move, Ryanair has also announced that it has decided to cut not less than 250 flights from the airport. Over and above, several other full-fare carriers have given a hint that they may take similar measures enabling them to offset their rising fuel bills.

Belfast residents bid farewell to Berlin easyJet flight
European Airlines | EasyJet

easyJet, one of the largest low-cost airlines of Europe has decided to suspend its services on the Belfast - Berlin route. As per the plan, easyJet will no more offer any direct flights connecting the Belfast International Airport and Schoenefeld-Berlin with effect from October. During this interim period, the passengers can however book tickets as usual for the other flights.

According to some analysts, the main reason for the airline to suspend this route is the soaring oil prices. However, the carrier says that the axing has not got anything to do with the fuel prices, with one of the chief concerns being the low passenger rate on this route. Addressing journalists, a spokesperson of the airline said that because of the low demand, the airline is not able to guarantee any profitability on this route. The airline did not rule out the possibilities of opening the route once again on a later date. However, the airline is quite certain that it will not operate any flights in the route for the winter months.

Most notably, this is not the only route that easyJet has decided to cancel. The carrier has also reported that it has planned to stop its flights on the Northern Ireland to Gdansk (Poland) route also.

easyJet lightens the load this summer
European Airlines | EasyJet

In a significant move, easyJet has launched a facility to enable passengers purchase extra weight allowance for holding their baggage ahead of their flight. According to the new facility, passengers can pay for their excess weight charges online, at a highly attractive rate.  This move is also a measure to save them time at the airport check-in.

The facility will be made available in 3 kg denominations. The scheme also enables that passengers save £3 when compared to the rate of £15 per 3kgs charged at the check-in desk charged on the day of travel.

According to the earlier scheme, if a customer wants to pre-pay for excess luggage carried while travel after the booking has been made, this can be done only through the contact center. On the launch of the new scheme, the customers can pre-pay for the excess baggage right at the time of booking, either online or over the telephone according to their convenience. Even as the new scheme comes into force, the earlier scheme of paying the extra charges at the airport still continues, however at a higher rate.

easyJet withholds BAA price hike payment
European Airlines | EasyJet

On 15th April, easyJet, the low-cost carrier announced that it has decided to withhold part of passenger charges payments that it owes to BAA, the operator of Gatwick Airport. The said decision of easyJet was conveyed to Colin Matthews, the new chief executive of BAA through a letter. The decision of easyJet follows the strict objection expressed by easyJet towards the 21 percent increase in passenger charges announced by BAA. Notably, this rise in charges came into effect on 1st April.

Awaiting the outcome of a judicial review, the said payments in full measures will be withheld in a separate bank account. If easyJet should fail in the legal challenge, then the airline will arrange to pay the amount accrued till then in addition to the interest accumulated. If the judicial review turns favorable to the interests of passengers and easyJet, then easyJet will arrange to return the money to its customers. To agree on the principles of this proposal, easyJet has given time to BAA until tomorrow.

Andy Harrison, the Chief executive of easyJet remarked, "We are determined to address a regulatory decision which we consider to be unlawful and damaging for the airlines, our passengers and the industry as a whole. If we cannot reach agreement, easyJet will need to consider what arrangements it may be able to put in place without BAA's consent. If we agree on those principles, there will be some legal paperwork to set in place, so this letter is formally subject to contract."
