Iceland Express, the budget airline has recently announced the launch of a brand new Gatwick service to complement the existing Stansted flights. However, the airline has told recently that the launch is scheduled for the spring of 2009. However, as per the earlier arrangements, the new route connecting London Gatwick and Reykjavik was to commence on 16th September 2008. Once the route is served by the airline commencing from the spring of 2009, the airline will operate five services per week.
Marketing manager for Iceland Express, Birna Guomundsdottir noted, "We have decided to move the launch of this exciting new service to the spring as it is the peak travel season for Iceland. While the number of bookings has never been higher for Iceland Express, we do not want the current increase in fuel costs to impact on the ticket prices for our customers. Iceland Express is remaining cautious in the current uncertain economic climate, while continuing to deliver the best possible service at the best possible price. Iceland Express is a Budget airline and we want to ensure it stays that way." Most notably, the airline is also highly excited to announce that it will introduce two Boeing 737-700s with effect from September. The aircraft employed for this purpose are highly environmental friendly and will show a 25 per cent reduction on fuel costs for the airline. The passengers who had booked flights on the said service have been duly notified of the postponement and given either a full refund or an alternative flight. |

All those waiting eagerly for quite sometime were thrilled to see the opening of the brand new terminal extension at Stansted Airport, a £50 million project. During the early hours on the 1st of July, phase I of the recently extended terminal let its gates open to the travelers. The refurbishment consists of an additional 6,000 square metre of space for passengers who arrive at the airport. Amazingly, about 1,500 tonne of steel was used to develop this infrastructure. The facility also features a sixth baggage reclaim belt in addition to an ample extra desk space for immigration control.
Stansted's strategy director, Nick Barton, noted, "At peak times we can expect over 3300 arriving passengers an hour through the terminal. With this new extension we are continuing to provide the best possible facilities for passengers. The installation of a state of the art biomass heating boiler will mean the new extension is carbon-neutral, to emphasize the commitment of Stansted to diminish the terminal's environmental impact. We take great pride in introducing biomass technology that will ensure this new development will be carbon-neutral."
The project is still underway and as part of the ongoing developments, more number of new shops and highly equipped and more comfortable waiting areas for accommodating friends and relatives are to open in addition to new and improvised transport facilities. The further developments are expected to be launched by December 2008, assuring to bestow a new and enhanced look to the airport. |

Recently, the BAA has added 50,000sq ft (4,645sq m) of space, featuring a range of new shops, quality restaurants, a bar and a pub at the South Terminal.
The move has further increased the range of food options offered by the airport in the South Terminal. The new arrivals to the terminal include a relocated and revamped McDonalds, an Apostrophe café and an open-plan Pret. An attractively furnished and brand new £1.2m JD Wetherspoon pub named the Flying Horse and called after the pre-airport racecourse history of this location and the new Bridge Bar have also opened. The new arrivals also include a family-friendly restaurant Frankie & Benny's which has found a highly welcomed entry into the airport in addition to a milkshake bar Shake-a-Hula.
Over and above, a brand new Accessorize store has found its way in the terminal, selling fashion and accessories. Recently released figures show that not less than 2.5 million passengers fly into Heathrow Airport from several British destinations in an average year. Following the release of these figures, the campaign for developing a high-speed rail network has gained a significant momentum.
Typically, passengers get transferred to a regional hub for connecting with a longer-haul flight. This group becomes the battleground for the debate going on presently concerning the construction of a third runway at the Heathrow Airport. Those opposing the idea of the third runway claim that the data proves that several Heathrow slots are taken up by flights and that this would be unnecessary is there was a high-speed rail service made available.
A transport spokesman noted, "If the case for domestic flights diminishes then the case for a third runway is also weakened. It's absurd to have large numbers of people taking short-haul flights in this country when there is much more extensive use of high-speed rail in other European countries."

Spain's largest low fare airline, clickair has started its latest route connecting London Gatwick and Vigo in northern Spain. Most notably, this is the first time there have been direct flights from the UK to Spain's Pontevedra province in South Galicia. The first flight of the brand new service got off with a good start on 21st June. The airline operates three times weekly services in the route on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, employing Airbus A320 for this purpose. For more than a year, clickair worked in association with the Foundation Provigo to study the need and desirability of this particular link to London. It is said that the route will transport not less than 60,000 passengers in its first year alone. This number shall go up to 1.5 million passengers travelling through Vigo's international Peinador Airport in 2008. This was revealed by a statistics by the Spanish Airports and Air Traffic authority AENA. In the above said connection, a significant investment has been made to improve the infrastructure of Peinador Airport by AENA to prepare it for the start of the service. Vigo, the largest city in Galicia has a population of 300,000, and attracts ever-increasing number of business travelers and tourists year after year. The area is highly popular for its traditional shipbuilding and fisheries activity. Over and above, the destination also boasts of a rich history and culture that dates earlier than the Roman Conquest. The cosmopolitan outlook and the beautiful beaches of the region are highly interesting. |

Noted for alrming number of delays and poor customer service, Heathrow Airport drastically needs an impending action to solve these issues, claims a report. According to London First, a business organization representing the leading employers of the capital, per year Heathrow Airport must handle 5000 flights lesser than the present number. This move shall help ease the threat to the prosperity of the city. Suggesting an alternative move, the report has called for an expansion of the airport while maintaining the present number of flights.
The report further observes that since Heathrow is presently functioning to its 99% capacity, one single instance of flight delay leads to worrying delays across different flights. Notably, among 10 instances of Heathrow flight delays, not less than four are due to the fact that both the runways function very close to their maximum capacity. This condition leads to the fact that a simple security scare or a mild disturbance in weather can give way to a big havoc. If the airport can bring down its operations by cutting down the number of flights, it shall mean that the delays can be cut by 15% according to the claims of the group.
Baroness Jo Valentine, London First chief executive noted, "Heathrow has been turned from a silk purse to a sow's ear. For years, government, policy-makers and the regulator have failed to prioritise the interests of airport passengers. Quite simply, if business can't fly easily, reliably and comfortably from London, it will go elsewhere." |

Civair, the South African carrier, has uncovered its intentions to start a service on the route from London Stansted to Cape Town. This is great news for passengers as lots of airlines are decreasing the number of routes served from major airports of England and with the introduction of this route, passengers would find it easy to travel to South African city of Cape Town.
While speaking to Business Day, the carrier's chief executive Andy Cluver predicted that the company would gain regulatory permission to fly three times per week on the route.
The planned connection includes a stop-off at Barcelona, which makes Civair the first South African carrier to offer a direct link to Spain, which could further open some new opportunities.

Sri Lankan Airlines will be beginning scheduled service between the United Kingdom and the Maldives this autumn season.
Starting from the 26th of October, the airline will fly a four times a week service from London Heathrow airport to capital city Male, with an estimated 11 hours and 15 minutes' journey time. This is great news for passengers who want to fly to this place from London. Now they will be able to take direct flights from Heathrow Airport to Maldives, which are also provided by Air Maldives but have shortage of flying machines.
Air Maldives, the National carrier, already operates direct flights to the UK airport, but with a fleet of only five flying machines the carrier has made a great effort to accommodate multiplying demand for a number of routes.

Birmingham International Airport (BIA) has begun work on a £45 million development for Terminal one (T1).
When completed, the modern and bright facility, called the International Pier, will be a three storeys and 240 metre long structure. This would turn the air travel experience of passengers using Birmingham International Airport into a great one as they would be able to enjoy finest qualities of features that would be available to them at the airport.
The new facility will offer air-bridged plane parking for seven wide-bodied flying machines as well as space for thirteen smaller planes, and will also feature a number of new lounges for passengers. So, the development will mean that the airport would bear a new outlook on technical grounds and also for the facilities provided to the passengers.

On Monday Australia's Qantas Airways called off 6 flights and said that it might make use of strike-breakers after engineers went on a two day strike.
ALAEA (Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association) members walked off the work in three states, disturbing services in Sydney, Cairns and Melbourne, over the carrier's refusal to give a wage rise of five per cent for 1,500 engineers. The company is offering three per cent.
Kevin Brown, Qantas Executive General Manager for People, said, "I don't think that there is a settlement at hand here. Each time we go to meet the ALAEA they put on strike action, and we've been very clear about this, we're not going to meet with a gun to our head".

London Luton airport is to impose a fee of £1 on travellers who want to make use of a luggage trolley, according to the reports by the Mirror.
And, unlike the money that the customers are depositing as a security for using trolleys in a supermarket which they will get back after returning the trolley, passengers would not get their money back at the airport.
The new trolleys will be brought in on the 26th of July at London Luton airport, which is serving more than ten million travellers per year.

Aer Lingus, the flag carrier of Ireland, has turned down approaches to sell its precious London Heathrow slots notwithstanding the continuing pressure it is facing as a result of record high prices of fuel which have doubled over the last one year, according to the reports by the Irish Independent newspaper.
The bids, by the American airline companies Delta and Continental, were made shortly after the Open Skies deal between the EU and US came in to force in the month of March.
It is expected that airlines that are having good slots in famous airports are facing problems due to high prices and they are made to cancel the flights and routes, which results in their wasting their slots. However, showing a positive intent, Aer Lingus has turned down the bids for its slots though the airlines is facing acute problems due to sky-rocketing prices of fuel.

Which?, the leading consumer magazine, has named Singapore Airlines as the Best Airline at their annual awards function held in London only weeks after being recognised as the 'Airline of the Year by the Official Airline Guide (OAG).
These new accolades come in the year in which the carrier started operating the A380, the world's largest passenger flying machine. This is a great start for Singapore Airlines, as they will have their confidence boosted up though the whole aviation industry is facing severe problems due to continuous increase in fuel costs around the world.
The Which? Awards ceremony, that took place at the British Museum on the 17th of June, recognise the very best in consumer products and services-from domestic appliances to restaurants and retailers-in the United Kingdom.

Starting from 26th October, the Dublin-based carrier will operate five flights per week between the two destinations, giving both business and leisure travellers the chance to explore these cities.
Newcastle Airport's Chris Sanders said, "We are delighted that Aer Lingus is reintroducing its service to Newcastle this winter. The Dublin route is our busiest international low cost route and has become very popular for business and leisure trips in both directions".

Birmingham Airport is spending about £2 million to improve its car parking facility in an attempt to avoid congestion as drivers drop off travellers.
The car parking improvements, which centre on a drop and go space close to the airport's Terminals 1 and 2 for dropping off passengers, have been tailored to keep traffic moving.
The airport had to make alterations to what was the outdoor short-stay car parking space after it was ordered to stop drivers making use of the traditional laid-down tracks outside its terminals 1 and 2, following the unsuccessful attack at Glasgow Airport in the month of June last year.

On Wednesday Singapore Airlines (SIA) said that the carrier and its regional arm SilkAir would raise their fuel surcharge on their flights with effect from 24th of June in response to a continuous upward trend in the price of jet fuel.
This was for the third time within the period of three months that the company had announced increases in its fuel surcharge. No wonder that this clearly shows the impact of fuel cost rise on the airlines-it is also expected that the fuel cost prices are going to increase further and the aviation industry will soon be facing more problems of similar sort on this issue.
For its services on the routes between Singapore and Southeast Asian nations, the carrier would increase the fuel surcharge to USD$40 from the existing surcharge of USD$35 per sector, the company said in a statement.

Southern, the train operator will take charge of the operations of the popular rail service Gatwick Express that runs between central London and Gatwick Airport on the 22nd of June.
The first train will leave Victoria at 3.30 a.m. for the Gatwick airport.
The airport rail connection is to come under stewardship of Southern as part of a plan to reduce overcrowding on the Brighton route. This could turn to be a crucial change for the Gatwick Express as crowding is a major problem for passengers who want to go to Gatwick Airport from London-but now, it seems the problem will be solved.

Green supporters have demanded schemes to expand Edinburgh Airport to be withdrawn in the face of record high levels of the prices of oil, according to the Scotsman.
As per its published master plan, the airport could nearly treble by the year 2030, with land being set aside for a possible second airstrip and the Highland Showground being pushed to move to permit the airport operator BAA to construct yet another airport parking.
According to estimates, around 22.5 million travellers a year will be passing through Edinburgh Airport by the year 2030, assuming that the prices of oil today are just $60 per barrel.

A new system has been installed at London Heathrow airport in order to support the safety of the planes at the time of their departure and when they touch the ground again.
Now, the south airstrip of the Heathrow airport has been fitted with Tarsier-a dual radar utility-which scans the entire runway for Foreign Objects and Debris (FOD) throughout the day.
The airports in UK are continuously striving to make sure that there is no problem on the runways so that the small accidents of airplanes could be reduced to maximum possibility. It is clear that with the introduction of new system, the monitoring of the airport would be better and officials would be able to take proper action in case of any issue.

An intensive growth in tourism in Montenegro, addition of new accommodation facilities, and continuously rising number of overseas tourists coming to Montenegro demanded plenty of the transportation facilities.
In order to meet the demand for an improved air access, Montenegro Airlines added more flights to the existing routes and started new services to locations that were recognized as the most important originating markets for both tourism and business. This is great news for passengers who are looking to visit Montenegro from London, as they would be able to take direct flights.
As of June 15th, the carrier is starting a new service on the route from London Gatwick to Tivat. Initially, it will operate two times a week flight, on each Wednesdays and Sundays, and later will start third weekly flight.

Manchester Airport, will be celebrating its seventieth anniversary on the 25th of June.
Initially called Manchester (Ringway) Airport, the facility today is the largest regional (non-London) airport in the United Kingdom and the forth largest in the UK on the whole. This is a great occasion for the airport, as it has provided a great base for passengers who are not travelling from London to travel to various destinations around Europe and the world.
A number of special events have been designed which will take place during the year to mark the occasion. Some of these celebratory events include an M Fest family day, the long awaited completion of the new Concorde hangar and a dinner for dignitaries.

A total of sixty-five parties have expressed their interest in Prague Airport, which is set to be privatized in an offer, says Austrian daily Wirtschaftsblatt quoted Czech Transport Minister Ales Rebicek as saying.
According to the paper, Rebicek was said, "With Prague being the only significant airport in the region to be privatized in 2008 and 2009, I expect a big international tender. So far we have already 65 parties who said they were interested."
Previously in the month of June, the Czech government passed a scheme to sell Prague Airport in an offer that will be the biggest privatization arrangement of its term.

The confusion greeting travellers at the opening of London Heathrow's new terminal, T5, may generate a hand-out for shareholders of owner Ferrovial, Bloomberg cites Mr. Steven Fernandez, an analyst for Exane BNP Paribas in Paris as saying. This is one of the comments of many people who are lashing at the problems of Terminal 5.
Mr. Fernandez says that the difficulties may give out British regulators ammunition to break open the sale of at least one of the 7 airports in United Kingdom operated by BAA.
Gatwick airport could go for as much £3.4 billion, and an offer would help the second largest construction firm in Spain to cut back debt and concentrate investment on smaller number of facilities. This is not surprising to note that the problems due to Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport, lots of airlines and passengers are facing problems, and the consequences of these problems might turn the passengers to other airports.

Mr. Andrew Cornish, the managing director of Manchester Airport, has said that air travellers are dealing with inaptly extreme levels of stress when passing through the terminals of the country, which are quite right now and passengers are quite stressed.
The airport's managing director said that the once attractive impression of air travel had been changed by the sceptre of worry and fear due to strict security procedures and serious delays.
He warned that the latest restrictions on carry-on baggage, especially in relation to electronic items and liquids, took the chance of putting a large number of travellers off flying.

But as SSE (Stop Stansted Expansion) described the news as the 'rise and fall' of the airport, the airport operator BAA said that it was a reoccurring event against a background of a critical economic situation worldwide.
In the month of May, the number of passengers handled by Stansted decreased by 3.3 per cent (2,019,500) as compared to the same month a year ago and 4.4 per cent less from January until May this year (8,703,700).

Bedfordshire County Council has made an objection to plans to change flight paths over the county, which were proposed by the National Air Traffic Service (NATS).
